Busy Busy Busy...

We're leaving for California tomorrow and my mind is just swirling with all the things I need to do before then... laundry, packing, cleaning. And it all needs to get done in three short 1 hour bursts while Leilani naps in her room.

It's definitely a big change traveling with a baby. The logistics of it are staggering... The stroller gets gate-checked, car seat and base get counter-checked, how many bottles to bring on the plane, will she want this toy or that one, will she cry, will she sleep, will she get sick? And so on and so on. Aaahhh! It's close to overwhelming. But I remind myself, "We're not going to some 3rd world country. We're going to LA. If we forget something, we can just buy it there."

I need a vacation from this vacation.

Finally

I FINALLY got my petition letter today and I was accepted into the program. If that result is based off of my grades this past semester and my college placement test scores, then I'm not surprised. However, I did read online from several sources that the petition decisions are based on a lottery. Meaning it doesn't matter how well you do, it's all up for grabs. Either way, I'm in. Thank goodness.

Now I have to actually register for classes. And wouldn't ya' know it... the online registration site for my school is down today. So I either have to go downtown right now or I can wait until tomorrow to see if the site's back up. I can already see this is going to be a headache just like it was last semester.

But at least I'm in.

Five Days til California & Still No Petition

Only five more days until we leave for California. I gotta admit, I am kinda excited for the flight out there. It will be a great experiment and adventure traveling with Leilani. She had another tooth come in a couple of days ago, so I'm hoping she won't get another for a few weeks and won't be bother by teething while on the plane, not to mention the whole vacation!

At the other end of the spectrum, I'm still waiting for my petition results from school. I know it's only been one day since the school mailed out the letters, but sometimes we do get mail here pretty quickly, and I was hoping it would come today. No such luck. So it should be here tomorrow. I was told to call the school if I don't get anything by Friday. Let's hope it doesn't come to that.

Didn't I Graduate From College 6+ Years Ago?!?

After being laid off from jobs I loved twice in a span of 3 years, I decided it was time for a career change. It wasn't an easy choice to make... I've wanted to work in the interior design field for as long as I can remember. But with the economy the way it is, and sales down, I had to make a difficult decision to help support our little family. I came to the conclusion that I will never be able to pursue my career goals in this city. It's just the right place to be an Interior Designer. Seattle or Atlanta or New York or LA or Chicago would be the ideal places for me, but I can't just up and move. So I had to give it up, at least for now, for a career in a more stable field.

So after reading the MATC course catalog, I decided upon Phlebotomy. I don't really have a huge interest in the health care field, but I picked it because A) it's a stable career, and B) it is only a year-long program. (I couldn't imagine being in school for much longer than that!) So after taking three courses this past spring, (and getting all A's, by the way) I had to go through the process of "petitioning".

Petitioning is basically applying for a specific major after you've already applied and been accepted into school. What it entails is: a full physical, proof of all your typical childhood immunizations, and a criminal background check. So in March, I petitioned.

I was told via email that I would hear something back about my petition by May 15th. It is now May 17th. I'm still waiting on my petition results. Basically, whether or not I'm going to even get into the Phlebotomy program. And whether or not I can start my life soon. The wait is killing me. So this morning I decided to call the school and inquire about my petition. I was told that the letters were sent out this morning. What a coincidence.

Anyway, it shouldn't take more than two days to receive anything from MATC in the mail. So hopefully by Wednesday I should find out about my future.

Only Ten Days Left!

Only ten days until we leave for California! This vacation has been a long time coming and I'm so happy that it's coming soon. Three days at Disneyland, a day at a water park, a day roaming around L.A. tourist-style, a day of relaxing by the pool, and a couple of baseball games.

Although I must admit, I really couldn't care less about the baseball games. We can go to a Brewers game anytime we want, so I'm not thrilled we're going to two games while on vacation in California. But we're really going because my dad and brother never get to go to major league games of any sport, and we want to spend time with them.

I am thrilled about seeing my family. I rarely get to visit with them and it'll be really fun to spend time with them while doing some really fun things. Not to mention that my parents haven't seen Leilani since she was just a week old and my brother and his two kids have NEVER met her. So it will be great letting them visit with her. I think they will all be amazed by her. She's just that cool.

My only concern is flying with Leilani. Spending a total of eight hours on a plane with a 10 month old doesn't excite me. But she normally does well sitting through 3 hour-long hockey games on a regular basis, so I hope that might translate. I've been doing tons of reading about traveling with a baby and we're going to take everything I've learned and apply it. My wish is that she does so well on the plane that random strangers approach us at the baggage claim afterward just to thank us for being such good parents of such a well behaved little girl. I can dream, can't I?

Nashville

Warning: I'm exhausted and this blog kind of rambles on...

Mike and have been to Nashville three times in the last four years. We love visiting Tennessee. We love the Predators. We love walking around the city. And we definitely love the barbecue. We've even talked about moving down there.

It's sad to see the pictures of Nashville under water. I didn't know that the Cumberland River could overflow like that. I really hope Nashville and the surrounding Cumberland area recover quickly.

I would like to see more national news coverage regarding this disaster so that more people around the country understand what Nashville is going through. Not many people know that the area has been in a state of emergency, or for how long. While we all can look back at the floods of Katrina in New Orleans and remember how much coverage there was, and therefore how much help from the public they received, not many people know what's going on in Nashville and not many realize how much help they need. And I hope they get the help they need soon.

My gift to Me

I want to get a ring with Leilani's birthstone. The only problem is her birthstone in Peridot which is normally set in yellow gold and not white gold. I don't wear yellow gold. So I am having a hard time finding a ring I like at any stores in the area. So now I've resorted to shopping online for one, but I'm having a hard time deciding which ring to get since I can't see what they actually look like on my finger. But I've narrowed it down to two stand out rings. I can't decide between them... I want Mike to have an equal voice in the selection of the ring, but I want it to be something that reflects who I am too...

9 months

Leilani had her 9 month doctor appointment this week. She is still really skinny at a mere 17 lbs (25th percentile), yet really tall at 28.75" (90th percentile). She's as healthy as can be. And to top off such a great appointment... she didn't need any shots. Now we just need to keep her healthy and cold-free through our trip to California in two weeks. I keep my fingers crossed regularly that she won't start teething in the meantime either.
